FromNovember 24 to 28, the "14th International Conference on theHistory of Chinese Science and the 1st International AcademicSymposium on the Four Great Inventions of Ancient China" washeld at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology.Professor Ni Genjin and Associate Professor Zhao Yanping of ourschool were invited to participate in this grand event of the historyof science and technology.
TheInternational Conference on the History of Chinese Science began in1982 at the first conference held at the University of Leuven,Belgium, and then this grand event was held in turn at famousuniversities. It was an important academic conference in the historyof science history. This conference was attended by more than 160scholars from home and abroad, and it was the largest one for theprevious conferences on the history of science in China, includingProfessor Efthymios Nikolaidis, Chairman of the International Societyof Science and Technology History, Germany Dr. Lloyd L. Pinas, aresearcher of the Federal Institute of Physics and Technology, KonradHerrmann, and the Ambassador of the Republic of Suriname to China.More than 110 papers were presented at the conference. The topicsinvolved four major inventions, history of communication, traditionalcrafts, meteorological history, astronomical history, technologicalhistory, disciplinary history, metrology history, comprehensivehistory and other fields.

Inthe topic of "The Ancient Chinese Science and Technology andCivilization Process", the participating scholars showed andreported the latest achievements of the four major inventions. Aftermore than 20 years of research, Professor Li Xiaocen of NanjingUniversity of Information Science and Technology found that there was"Paper Method", and for the first time fully revealed theWestern Han "Papering Method" paper making process, thepapermaking technology began more than two hundred years in advance.Professor Rong Zhiyi's report believes that gunpowder should beinvented at the latest in the Wei and Jin Dynasties, more than 400years earlier than the traditional understanding that gunpowder wasinvented during the Tang and Song Dynasties. Professor EfthymiosNikolaidis' "Science and Religion in Southeastern Europe: thedevelopment of Narses Project", and Professor Guan Zengjian's"History and Research Status of Compass Research" all putforward very novel ideas. Professor Ni Genjin from our college gave areport on "A Preliminary Study on the Cultivation History ofSanhua Li in Lingnan" at the meeting, which gave a detailedcombing of the planting history and variety evolution of Sanhua Li,and elaborated on the local species from the perspective of theprotection of germplasm resources Protection and advice. As adirector, Professor Ni also participated in the Council of theChinese Society of History of Science and Technology during theconference.

Inthe opening ceremony of the conference, the China Institute ofTraditional Crafts of Nanjing University of Information Science andTechnology officially unveiled its name, becoming the firsttraditional crafts research institute in China. In the venue, NanxinInstitute of History of Science and Technology specially exhibited 30kinds of ancient Chinese astronomical and meteorological instruments,such as water transport instrument image platform, escapement waterclock, ground level theodolite, quadrant instrument, star dial, QinJiu Shao round poppy in Southern Song Dynasty Rain gauge, etc., anddemonstrated the use of the seismometer. After the meeting, thedelegates inspected the Arctic Pavilion, the birthplace of modernChinese meteorology, and visited China ’s first meteorologicalprofessional museum, the China Arctic Pavilion Meteorological Museum,which has contributed to the development of meteorology in China fromancient times to modern times and the progress of meteorologicalobservation technology to further understand.
